Metallic Top-Coat Choices

When it comes to choosing a top coat for the metallic system, it's important to pick the correct one. Just as important as surface prep, selecting the best top coat is important to a happy end user. Citadel has several top coat options to choose from to finish the metallic system that will best suit the needs of your client.

Polyurea-1 HD

HD is the most popular choice for finishing the metallic system. HD is easy to apply, with the ability to walk on in 4-6 hours and full return to service in 24 hours. Temperatures need to be above 45F, but that's usually not an issue since the Metallic coating needs to be applied when temps are above 60F. HD does have an odor, so make sure to let your clients know that they can expect an odor for the first 6 hours of the cure process. One thing that we like about HD, is its ability to allow Aluminum Oxide to be mixed directly into the liquid. We use 240 grit Aluminum Oxide (UDP) to not only matte out the finish, but also to increase scratch and abrasion resistance of the system. You can load the aluminum oxide at different amounts, maxing out at 3lbs per one gallon of liquid.

Polyurea-2 Ultra

A popular second choice would be Ultra-2. Ultra-2 is single component 100% solids UV stable Polyurea, which means little to no odor, so if you need a solution for an odorless install, Ultra is a great option. Ultra is a little different that HD, in that you can add UDP for all its benefits, or you can leave it out and get a smooth high gloss finish. Things to keep in mind when choosing a high gloss finish. One, they look great in pictures but the reality is they are a high maintenance floor. Two, high gloss floors will show every shoe scuff or even imperfections in the coating itself. High gloss floors were very popular years ago, but we are finding more and more end users are interested in a satin or matte finish. Adding 240 grit aluminum oxide will get you a satin finish in Ultra as well.

Poly-3WB

Poly-3 WB is a premium clear water-based two-part high performance urethane coating which utilizes aliphatic urethane polymer technology. It provides excellent film hardness, chemical, and abrasion resistance with less than 50 grams/liter VOC. High Gloss or Matte finish available. Two coats are necessary for an even smooth finish. No UDP needed or recommended with this coating.
